ABOUT TROUPE ‘HIP’NOTIC
Based in southern Maryland, Troupe ‘Hip’notic’s eclectic dance flavor is influenced by both traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern dance; drawing elements from cabaret, Turkish, Greek, folkloric Egyptian, American Tribal Style (ATS) and tribal fusion. Having no director, Troupe ‘Hip’notic is truly a democratic entity, with each troupe member contributing her own individual talents and creativity to keep the troupe functioning as a whole.
The troupe is composed of women with dance experience ranging from intermediate/advanced student to instructor. Although formally formed in 2004, several members of Troupe ‘Hip’notic were dancing together previously for over three years. Dancing soon evolved from the class and practice environment to public performances at community and cultural events, non-profit fundraisers and events, art festivals and educational events with venues ranging from small intimate settings to large theatrical productions.
As members of Troupe ‘Hip’notic, we seek to entertain and culturally enrich Southern Maryland through our performance of Middle Eastern dance. At the same time, we hope to remove the unfortunate and negative image often associated with this ancient art form by educating the public about belly dance and continuing to perform in a manner befitting this great dance. We wish to continually challenge ourselves and develop as dancers while reinforcing the bonds between the members of our troupe. Most importantly we seek to enjoy ourselves through the experiences of our dance and our friendships.
